Bullying Is Horrible!!
The young girl in the photo is Chy Johnson. She is a freshman at Queen Creek High School in Arizona. Chy was born with a brain disorder which in turn caused her to be bullied all of her life just for being "different." Chy's mother couldn't take seeing her daughter suffer from constant pain and fearing school. Rather than go to the school administrators, which rarely does any good, she reached out to facebook. She asked another student if he would reveal the names of the bullies since Chy was to scared to reveal them. That student was Carson Jones, who is also the starting quarterback for the football team. Carson had a better idea. He went to the rest of the football team and informed them of the situation. The team now escorts Chy to and from class everyday, as well as eating lunch together, and even hanging out together. The moment the entire football team became her bodyguard, all the bullying stopped. Chy says " that all her boys love her so much." No longer is Chy afraid to go to school.
This article literally made me cry. Ya, you read right. I myself have an uncle who suffers from mental disabilities so I know all too well how cruel people can be. Chy may suffer from a brain disorder, but that doesn't mean she does not deserve human decency. Sometimes the people with the worst disabilities are the best among us. They are not blinded by the lies that we tell ourselves everyday. They see things for how they are and that is a gift in and of itself.
My biggest response from this article was not anger though, as it often is when it comes to bullying. It was actually a great sense of hope. There are times where I feel I have no hope left for mankind but then I find a beam of light in the darkness that is modern society. These miraculous young men give me hope for the future of mankind.
However, not all students, or all people for that matter, are this kind. I feel that we need to start programs that teach equality of all peoples. The programs are not just aimed at those with disabilities, but also those of different religions, ethnicity, sexes, and interests. I'm not saying it would be an overnight change but it would be a huge step in the right direction.
