Social Skills Lesson Plan
1. Lesson Plan Title: Going Shopping
2. Concept/Topic to Teach: Socially acceptable behavior in the grocery store.
3. General Goal: the general goal of this lesson will to teach third graders how they should act around other individuals when going to the grocery store while also using all the math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) obtained thus far.
4. Specific Objectives: specifically the plan is designed to teach third graders how to make appropriate decisions based on interpersonal relationships in a public setting.
5. Required Materials: For this lesson, the students will need to provide nothing but their attention and eagerness to learn. As for the materials I will need to provide, I will turn a portion of the classroom into a mini shopping center with two or three different grocery sections with various foods, electronics, and toys. I will also provide a calculator for the students to use as a cash register for totaling their items and shopping basket.
6. Step-by-step Procedures: First two students will paired up. Then the pair will choose who will play the adult and who will play the child. They will then go through the store and the parent will choose ten items that they wish to purchase. The child may ask for certain items to be purchased but they must ask politely and if the parent says no then they must move on without arguing or throwing a tantrum. If the pair can successfully purchase the ten items without any arguments or tantrums, as well as, total their final purchases correctly, then they will have successfully completed the task and will recieve a passing grade. Also, they shall receive a sticker on a card that goes towards a pizza party at then end of the cemester.
7. Assessment Based On Objectives: The assessment will be based how many arguments arise between the students. If the number of arguments is few to none, then the activity was a success. The students will have learned how to behave in a public setting with their parents where they can not always get what they want. As well, they will see how everyone should act civilized in public. However, if the arguments and tantrums are great then the lesson was a failure and needs to be recalibrated to become more effective.
8. Adaptations: for students with physical disabilities, the setting will be set up for them to navigate easier or will be aided in any other way that helps them to complete the lesson. For students with learning disabilities, I myself will play the adult so that every question that arises within the lesson I can immediatley answer and help the student understand the lesson more in depth if need be. If there are still problems, then I am more than happy to set up some time to meet with the students one-on-one to help them to understand the lesson better.
9. Extensions: In this activity, there will be no extensions. It is designed to emphasize basic social skills for all human beings and to teach how to be succssful in society. I do not want any student to come out feeling that they are better than any other student because they grasped that concept a little quicker than some students who might be more shy or have poor social skills to begin with.
10. Connections to Other Subjects: The connections come in the pricing of the items, especially towards the end of the lesson. As previously stated, the students will have to successfully total up the price of the ten items they wish to purchase. The calculator, that I will provide, will be used to total the items. I will confirm whether the total is correct or not. They have to get a correct total in order to pass. Every incorrect total will result in point deductions.
