My Classroom Floor Plan
Unfortunately, I had some trouble using the floor plan design. However, this example I discovered is very close to what I had in mind for my classroom. About the only thing I do not agree with is the sink in the back of the room. In a classroom based on teaching the social sciences and history there is really no need for a sink.
The teacher's desk is located across from the door so the teacher can see just who is coming and going from the classroom. It also gives the teacher and optimal view of all the students desks. No student table is too far from the sight of the teacher.
The students, as well, all have a proper view of the teacher's desk. Not only can they see the desk, they all also have a clear view of the front of the classroom where the whiteboard would be located and where the projector is facing.
Traffic flow is also optimal. There is no confusing or winding spaces. Everything is set up to have smooth, straight walkways to prevent any poor traffic flow. Also, there is enough space between all of the parts of the room so that no one will be crowded with the only exception that the Teacher's desk needs to come forward about a foot to a foot and a half. There is a single desk in the back of the room for various situations whether it been an extra student added to the class, for a disruptive student to sit to keep him or her from disrupting his classmates, and etc.
There is plenty of room to make accomodations for any students with special needs. If for instance the child is in a wheel-chair the desks are plenty tall for a it to fit under the desk. Any other accomodations that may be needed will be implemented accordingly.
Lastly, the overall design of the room is set up to encourage teamwork and room to grow. The bookshelves located around the room will be filled with reference materials for the students. The beanbag chairs are to be a reward for showing initiative in the class and for providing satisfactory grades and other situations that may arise. There will also be a series of windows located over the north wall over all the book shelves. This is designed to open up the room and allow the students to feel a sense of freedom. The hope of this open space and an open room will allow the students to feel comfortable with me as their teacher and to be able to communicate with me their problems both in school and anything else that may be troubling them.
